EHX unveils the Grand Canyon delay and looper

In somewhat predictable news, Electro-Harmonix is unveiling a big brother to their Canyon delay/looper, aptly named the Grand Canyon. Some improvements include stereo outputs, dedicated knobs for the hidden parameters, ability to use delay and looper independently and a new doubler mode. The Grand Canyon is expected to be priced at $249. See you next year when they announce the Oceans 12 reverb.

Fender unveils new pedals at NAMM

These, I believe, are Fender's first pedals since the unexceptional Competition Series pedals and certainly look more inspired than their predecessors.

Pugilist Distortion - MSRP: $99.99

It's pretty feature-rich for a dedicated buffer pedal, if only because buffer pedals generally don't feature anything other than the buffer. Along with level and hi-frequency filter knobs, the footswitch allows you to mute the signal.

NUX unveils some Strymon-looking pedals

NUX has unveiled a line of three new pedals, and at first look, one would assume they're Strymon clones. They share an identical design and knob placement, but the similarities seem to end there. Among the new pedals is the a combination delay and reverb, and an amp simulator, either of which Strymon has. The last new pedal is a combination booster and compressor, but doesn't appear to be a clone of Strymon's own booster/compressor.

Atlantic Delay & Reverb

TC Electronic unveils Sonic Specialists line of pedals

TC Electronic has unveiled their latest line of pedals, the Sonic Specialists. Coming in the same box as the "Behringer clones", they include a spring reverb, a shimmer reverb, a spinning speaker simulator and an Echoplex-styled pedal. Drip spring reverb

The best way to spice up your dry guitar sound with some distinctive character and depth is a good spring reverb. An homage to one of music's most recognizable reverb effects, Drip Spring Reverb instantly takes your tone back to the good old days of amp reverb, to the iconic California surf scene and countless classic blues recordings. Fluorescence shimmer reverb

Shimmer reverb is one of those effects that you have to hear for yourself before you really know what it is. Originally pioneered by recording legends Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, shimmer is produced by layering a tail of reverb that is pitched up an octave and sent through a feedback loop on top of the dry signal. This produces lush soundscapes that take on a life of their known, ranging from voluptuous chimes, to interstellar travel-like sounds that will evoke memories of Carl Sagan's Cosmos while you're playing.

Gauss tape echo

Few delay effects are more revered, or iconic, than the tape echo machines of yesteryear. The warm, fat tones of the vintage reel-to-reel tape units have become the stuff of legends, but they are hard to come by, pretty temperamental and typically quite expensive. The multi-tap capabilities of the Echolution 2 allow for the use of one or two discreet delays which can be assigned to musical subdivisions of the master delay time. The LFO modulation section of the Echolution 2 features true sample rate modulation where both the read and write heads of the delay line are affected by one of four different LFO waveforms (Sine, Square, Saw or Sample and Hold). Each of these LFO waveforms can also be quantized with a STEP mode and will run freely or sync to either tap tempo and MIDI with a variable speed ratio from 1:8 to 8:1.

The Echolution 2 sports four seperate filters (Low Pass, Tape, Comb and Sweep). Each of the first three modes can be combined with the SWEEP filter which is modulated by the LFO as described above. Any of these filter settings can then be run through a unique Pigtronix BIT CRUSHER destruction filter within the delay line as well. The delay line can also be turned off, to allow for the advanced modulation, pitch shifting and filter capabilities to be used as stand-alone effects.

Every knob on the Echolution 2 can be mapped to the expression pedal. Using the included software, multiple functions can be mapped to expression with adjustable range for each parameter. Additionally, an envelope follower within the pedal can also be mapped to any parameter, with user definable sensitivity and release time for each function.

Advanced features such as Reverse, Ducking, Trails, Listen and Ping Pong modes are augmented by a unique Halo “Shimmer” function which causes the echoes to rise in octaves on each repeat. The externally triggered Freeze function allows you to loop the content of the delay line and an all new footswitch activated “Jump” function sends your echoes cascading up by any desired musical interval within an a when desired. The TRS remote switch accessory pedal for the Echolution 2 provides Jump and Freeze functions as well as instant access to four favorite presets in each bank.

Echolution 2 supports up to 60 custom presets contained in 6 banks of 10, all of which can be edited in real time via the front panel and saved to the machine. Hands free Preset selection is accomplished by holding down the onboard TAP switch, using an external remote footswitch or via MIDI preset change command. The included PC/MAC application allows even deeper real time editing as well as the ability to import artist presets and share your own custom presets online.

MIDI IN provides instant preset change, Tap Tempo and LFO synchronization with an external source as well as remote control over every function of the Echolution 2. MXR unveils Carbon Copy Deluxe

MXR will be releasing an upgraded version of their popular Carbon Copy analog delay. The new features are as follows:

- The maximum delay time has been increased from 600 ms to 1.2 seconds
- Tap tempo with four subdivisions (dotted 8th, 8th, triplet, and 16th)
- A "bright" button, which switches to the MXR Carbon Copy Bright circuitry
- "Speed" and "Width" knobs to control modulation, which were previously internal trimpots
- An input jack for an expression pedal

Walrus Audio unveils ARP-87 Multi-Function Delay

The ARP-87 is a compact, feature-rich delay, packed with a large pallet of inspirational delay tones. Featuring four main algorithms, digital, analog, lo-fi, and slap back, the ARP-87 can cover some serious ground in the world of echoes. The Digital algorithm boasts pristine, crystal clear repeats great for rhythmic riffs. The Analog setting works well to add warmth and dimension to chords and lines without getting in the way. The Lo-Fi algorithm, with its adjustable frequency range on the repeats, goes from warm, warped, and murky, to strait AM radio. Finally, the Slap setting makes it easy to dial in a great slap back echo perfect for smoking chicken pickin’ runs. With other features like our smart bypass switching, and momentary knob ramp, the ARP-87 provides endless creative opportunities that are waiting to be explored.

The X knob changes functions depending on which Algorithm you are using. It adjusts a specific parameter in each algorithm. In Digital, Analog, and Slap modes, the knob will control modulation depth. In Lo-fi mode, the knob will control Filter width.

Note that when changing delay types this loads a whole new algorithm and the tempo must be tapped in again.

Trails Mode

The ARP-87 can be run in trails or no trails mode. In trails mode, when you turn the pedal off, the delay trails die off naturally. In no trails mode, the delay trails are abruptly cut off when you turn the pedal off. To toggle between either mode, hold down the bypass switch for 1 second while applying power to the pedal. Unplug power and repeat to toggle to the other mode.

Momentary Functions:

When the switch is in off position, press and hold the Bypass Switch to temporarily activate the effect to add a moment of delay texture. Releasing the switch turns the effect off. When the effect is on, press and hold the bypass switch to momentarily ramp the X parameter to maximum. Releasing the switch sets the X parameter back to the knob location.

Press and hold the Tap Switch to temporarily ramp the feedback to maximum. Release to set the feedback back to the knob location.

TC Electronic unveils Flashback 2 Delay

TC Electronic has unveiled the inevitable Flashback 2 Delay. Much like the Hall of Fame 2 reverb pedal, the Flashback 2 will have the pressure-sensitive "MASH" footswitch, octave capabilities, and two additional TonePrint slots over its predecessor. JHS introduces Pink Panther delay

The original Pink Panther was one of the early JHS pedals in our line and was the first JHS delay pedal dating back to 2007-2008. Electro-Harmonix Canyon Delay and Looper demo

The Canyon was first teased last month at NAMM 2017, but today EHX has put out an official demo video. It's not unlike other multi-delay pedals on the market, but with the Sample & Hold mode and secondary knobs to fine-tune the modulation, it should be a worthy competitor to similarly-priced pedals like the TC Flashback. Prymaxe currently has it at $139.

Death by Audio introduces Micro Dream and Evil Filter

The Micro Dream is the Echo Dream stripped down to just the delay function. It's priced at $200.

The Evil Filter is priced at $380 and will ship in February.

Psycho HP/BP/LP filter. When pushed to the limit it glitches out into octaves up, down, and insanity. Has 2 really nasty fuzzes, one straight forward and powerful as heck - the other pushing and pulling with every chord. CV/Expression in - slam the filter up and down in sync with an arpeggiating synth or control it with an expression pedal. Sounds amazing with synth and guitar.

JHS unveils Milkman and VCR

The Milkman will ship in early spring 2017, and is priced at $179.

The Milkman is a collaborative idea between Josh Scott of JHS Pedals and Tim Marcus of Milkman Sound. The concept is simple; a single pedal that offers up an echo/slap delay and a boost that can be used as an always-on enhancer or as an overdrive for small wattage amplifiers. Josh designed the circuit in late 2016 and here we are, a small footprint, easy to use boost/echo 2-in-1 that fits into any style players rig with ease. Let's look at the controls.

The right side of the pedal is the boost side. This boost is a discreet amplifier based circuit with tons of power and character. Simply set it low at unity gain for an always-on enhancer that fattens up and clarifies your tone, or turn more clockwise to push your tube amplifier into sweet natural overdrive. The left side of the pedal is the echo/slap delay circuit. This circuit is designed to be a hybrid of tape echo and analog BBD delay. The controls are simple and it sounds good in every setting. The “Slap” knob is the amount of delay time. As you turn the knob up, you will get longer delay times. Keep in mind, this pedal is designed for shorter vintage slap-back delay times. The “Mix” knob is the effect level. Full counter clockwise is all dry and full clockwise is full wet/effect. The “Repeat” knob controls how many echoes or repeats you get. The minimum is one and maximum is around 4.5 repeats. "Repeat" knob lets you fine tune how many delays you will get. Lastly is the “EQ” knob. This control only affects the repeat delay signal so that you can perfectly adjust the brightness or darkness of your echo. When fully counter clockwise the repeats are at their darkest much like an old BBD analog delay. When fully clockwise the repeats are the brightest they will be with more grit, this is much like a classic tape delay machine.

The footswitching is our typical 2 in 1 arrangement where either effect can be used separately or together. The foot switch on the left, the switch will turn the delay on/off and the footswitch on the right will turn the boost on/off.

The VCR will ship in early spring 2017, and is priced at $259.

The VCR pedal is a first in a new collaboration between PaxAM, Ryan Adams, and JHS Pedals. The VCR pedal is Ryan's signature Volume/Chorus/Reverb pedal inspired by the tones of The Cure, The Smiths and a hefty dose of 1980’s angst. Dial in the perfect movement, ambience and volume/boost level to create an instant three effect analog preset.

There is one true bypass stompswitch that functions as a master on/off and each of the three effects are turned on/off with their respective toggle. There is a corresponding LED for each effect that indicates when the effect is on/off. All three effects can be used together or individually.

The volume/boost is an all discreet transparent boost that can be used as an always-on enhancer, lead booster, or pushing an amp into natural overdrive.

The Chorus is based around classic 1980s analog chorus pedals. With Chorus knob at 12-noon, this emulates a common 80s chorus pedal with ALL knobs at noon. As y0u turn the Chorus knob to the right... the rate will increase and depth will decrease. As you turn the Chorus knob to the left, rate decreases and depth increases.

The Reverb is a hall reverb tweaked to Ryan's exact preferences. The reverb and decay is fixed and the knob functions as an effect Level.

Last but not least there is a secret lo-fi switch to top things off.

Alexander unveils Sky Fi reverb and delay

The Sky Fi's reverb engine takes inspiration from certain digital rack units of the '80s and '90s. These units were designed to be as affordable as possible, and had some unique hardware quirks that caused their reverb effects to build in intensity over time. This "slow-building" artifact is one of the things that made these units so special. We've done our best to capture some of the magic of these units with the Sky Fi, while also incorporating some tricks of our own.

Controls:

Reverb — Adjusts the mix and decay of the reverb engine.
Delay — Controls the delay time for the delay engine.
Mix — Controls the blend between fully dry (clean) and fully wet (reverb + delay only) sound. 12 o’clock is an equal mix of clean and reverb + delay.
Repeat — Controls the feedback and repeats of the delay engine. Rotate counter-clockwise for dark, filtered repeats. Rotate clockwise for bright repeats.

Mode Toggle:

Wash — Combines an 800ms delay with our slow-building reverb engine. Holding the footswitch initiates reverb sustain.
Gleam — Adds an upper octave partial to the reverb effect, holding the footswitch swells in a pronounced shimmer. Maximum delay time in this mode is approximately 640ms.
Echo — Slow-build reverb plus delay, holding the footswitch reduces the reverb slightly and forces the delay into oscillation. Warning - extremely loud oscillation and / or total collapse of your signal may occur!

HOLD Function:

The Sky Fi has a unique feature - the bypass footswitch integrates with the reverb and delay engines. Hold the footswitch to shift the reverb or delay engine into a feedback mode. In Wash and Gleam modes, the Hold function increases the Reverb time and mix to an infinite setting. In Echo mode, the Hold function increases the Delay feedback to maximum levels.

Bypass Switching:

The Sky Fi features a buffered bypass with optional "trails." In Trails mode the reverb and delay will continue to repeat when the pedal is bypassed. To switch between standard bypass and trails, hold the bypass switch while powering on. The LED will blink once for standard bypass or five times for trails. The pedal remembers the last setting. The Sky Fi features an analog dry signal path.

Wet / Dry Output:

The Sky Fi allows the player to separate the wet and dry signals at the output jack. Insert a standard mono patch cable into the jack to use as a traditional guitar pedal - the output will contain both wet and dry signals as determined by the Mix knob. If a stereo / TRS cable is connected, the Sky Fi will place a buffered dry signal on the "ring" of the jack and a mix of wet and dry on the "tip." Set the Mix control fully clockwise to have complete wet / dry separation. The Sky Fi will send the dry signal to both outputs when bypassed.

Power Supply:

The Sky Fi requires a 9V DC power supply with a 2.1mm pin, center negative. The Sky Fi is not designed to be powered on supplies higher than 9V and does not use a battery. The Sky Fi should work fine on a multi-pedal "daisy chain" connector, but if you encounter excessive noise or hum try a separate power supply. The Sky Fi requires approx. 60mA.
