MXR introduces Sugar Drive (it's a klone)

It's a mini-klone. It's $119. It looks really cheesy. Alternatively, it looks kinda cool. For more info, visit MXR.

The MXR Sugar Drive provides a diverse range of clear and transparent overdrive tones, from sauced up boosting to blown-tube distortion. It’s based on a rare overdrive pedal that has acquired a mythical reputation among fanatical tone-seekers thanks to its unique circuit design.

The key elements of that circuit design are the Drive control and something called a charge pump. First, the Drive control on this pedal doesn’t just increase the intensity of the overdrive pedal. It starts with your clean signal and then blends it with the overdrive effect as you turn it up, replicating the smooth transition of an amplifier going from clean to dirty. The charge pump increases overall headroom, which opens everything up nicely.

Of course, we had to put the MXR touch on this circuit. If you’re all about true bypass, then you’re in luck—this pedal uses it by default. The original used buffered bypass, though, and we know there’s a lot of players out there who don’t want to fix something that isn’t broken. They’re in luck, too—just flick the Buffer switch on the side of the pedal to enable buffered bypassing.

With a simple three-knob setup and an MXR mini housing, this is the go-to overdrive to have on your pedalboard. It’s versatile and it saves space, and unlike the original pedals it’s based on, it won’t cost you thousands of dollars.

Fender unveils new pedals at NAMM

These, I believe, are Fender's first pedals since the unexceptional Competition Series pedals and certainly look more inspired than their predecessors.

Pugilist Distortion - MSRP: $99.99
A dual gain-stage distortion with a switch-activated bass boost.

Level Set Buffer - MSRP: $99.99
It's pretty feature-rich for a dedicated buffer pedal, if only because buffer pedals generally don't feature anything other than the buffer. Along with level and hi-frequency filter knobs, the footswitch allows you to mute the signal.

The Bends Compressor - MSRP: $129.99
Maybe it's named after the Radiohead album. Maybe it's named after decompression sickness.

Marine Layer Reverb - MSRP: 149.99
The oddest name from a set of oddly-named pedals. At its price point, it'll have heavy competition with the TC Hall of Fame, DigiTech Polara, BOSS RV6, et al.

Mirror Image Delay - MSRP: $149.99
Like the Marine Layer Reverb, this one will have a lot of competition in the $150 range.

Santa Ana Overdrive - MSRP: $199.99
Some good tone-shaping potential here with two different voices, a 3-band EQ and optional boost.

JHS unveils Bonsai 9-in-1 Tubescreamer

It's basically a 9-mode Tubescreamer, similar to their previously released Muffuletta. At $229 though, it seems miles behind the Earthquaker Palisades, which is only $20 more. For more info, visit JHS Pedals.

In the late 1970's the overdrive pedal was arguably perfected when Japanese engineers designed the sound that we now know as the heart and soul of so many of our favorite artists, recordings and sounds. Players ranging from The Edge, Trey Anastasio, Buddy Guy, Kirk Hammett, John Mayer, SRV, Carlos Santana and thousands more from every possible genre have utilized and depended on this classic iconic green box. If a single effect pedal was chosen to board a Voyager 3 mission and be solely responsible for showing the universe the sound of overdrive, it would undoubtably be Tube Screamer. It is probably the most produced and sold pedal in the history of guitar pedals! The Bonsai is our tribute to one of the greatest pedals ever created.

MF Stupid Deal - Pigtronix Disnortion Micro

Musician's Friend has the Pigtronix Disnortion Micro on sale today for $74.

Pigtronix Disnortion Micro packs all the sonic glory and 18v headroom of the original analog Fuzz and Overdrive circuits from the large-format Disnortion pedal into a miniature version that runs on 9-volts. The original, 3-footswitch Disnortion pedal was in production from 2005 to 2015 and remains in constant use with world-class bands such as Queens of the Stone Age, Aerosmith, Living Colour and Muse. In response to a decade’s worth of customer feedback, we proudly update this classic analog stompbox with the introduction of the Pigtronix Disnortion Micro.

This new micro version of the Disnortion hugely one-ups the original’s broad palette of touch responsive dirt sounds by including the ability to switch from a parallel routing to a new, super-saturated series routing where the 6-stage CMOS overdrive circuit is cascaded into our unique diode clipping fuzz and output through a 6-way passive filter network. A single gain knob controls the saturation of both the fuzz and overdrive circuits simultaneously.

The Parallel routing mode is ideal for players who like to pile on the gain without sacrificing clarity, dynamic response, punch or low end - it’s like double tracking your guitar inside a micro pedal! The Series routing mode offers an even wider range of gain and more extreme filter effects for metal tones and beyond, including self-oscillating timbres that can be modulated by pickup selection and guitar control settings.

The CMOS overdrive found in the Disnortion Micro responds to the dynamics of your playing using a unique, 6-stage gain architecture that retains the natural tone of your instrument while adding tube-style breakup as you play louder. Pigtronix Fuzz has a unique diode-clipping architecture designed to deliver compression and controllable feedback while preserving the dynamics of your playing style. The rotary tone control filter switch provides 6 musical EQ curves using a complex passive network which compliments the Overdrive channel’s traditional low-pass filter.

The original Pigtronix Disnortion is loved for its limitless headroom, making it compatible with any instrument, from the weakest '60s pawnshop single-coils the most belligerent humbuckers as well as 5-string active basses and modern synth rigs. Pigtronix Disnortion Micro achieves this world-class performance standard using standard 9v power—and it fits in your pocket.

NUX unveils some Strymon-looking pedals

NUX has unveiled a line of three new pedals, and at first look, one would assume they're Strymon clones. They share an identical design and knob placement, but the similarities seem to end there. Among the new pedals is the a combination delay and reverb, and an amp simulator, either of which Strymon has. The last new pedal is a combination booster and compressor, but doesn't appear to be a clone of Strymon's own booster/compressor.

Atlantic Delay & Reverb

The Atlantic Delay & Reverb features an analog, digital and tape echo on the delay side, and a spring, hall and plate on the reverb side. A shimmer effect can be added to the plate reverb with a momentary switch. According to NUX, it's expected to be priced around $160. For more info, visit NUX.

Earthquaker Devices unveils Westwood Translucent Drive Manipulator

It's basically a transparent overdrive, and with a list price of $179.00 it'll be within range of similar drive pedals. For more info, visit Earthquaker Devices.

Westwood is a touch sensitive translucent overdrive manipulator as clean and pure as the breeze which blows through a grove of Douglas Fir trees, and as hot as a damn fine cup of coffee.

This mild-mannered light- to medium-gain overdrive with active EQ controls will still knock the socks right off your trusty low-wattage combo amp, pushing it into anything from cutting, edge-of-breakup rhythm tones, all the way to articulate, singing lead tones stacked high with pleasing even-order harmonics and sweet, sweet sustain. And if you pair it up with your favorite head and cab, you should probably call the neighbors first, because the Westwood’s Level control has enough output on tap to alert the proper authorities. Even the FBI.

Each and every Westwood is a real Blue Rose case, hand built by a team of special agents in the Black Lodge of Akron, Ohio, USA, where the owls are not what they seem, there’s always music in the air, and the birds sing a pretty song.

TC Electronic unveils Sonic Specialists line of pedals

TC Electronic has unveiled their latest line of pedals, the Sonic Specialists. Coming in the same box as the "Behringer clones", they include a spring reverb, a shimmer reverb, a spinning speaker simulator and an Echoplex-styled pedal. The pedals are expected to be released in the coming months, check TC Electronic for more info.

Drip spring reverb

The best way to spice up your dry guitar sound with some distinctive character and depth is a good spring reverb. An homage to one of music's most recognizable reverb effects, Drip Spring Reverb instantly takes your tone back to the good old days of amp reverb, to the iconic California surf scene and countless classic blues recordings. Not to mention iconic instrumental bands such as The Shadows and The Ventures, who built their sound on those classic reverberated guitar tones. Quite simply, spring reverb was so ubiquitous on classic recordings that it has become a quintessential part of sound of the electric guitar.

For more info on the Drip, visit TC Electronic.

Fluorescence shimmer reverb

Shimmer reverb is one of those effects that you have to hear for yourself before you really know what it is. Originally pioneered by recording legends Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, shimmer is produced by layering a tail of reverb that is pitched up an octave and sent through a feedback loop on top of the dry signal. This produces lush soundscapes that take on a life of their known, ranging from voluptuous chimes, to interstellar travel-like sounds that will evoke memories of Carl Sagan's Cosmos while you're playing.

For more info on the Fluorescence, visit TC Electronic.

Gauss tape echo

Few delay effects are more revered, or iconic, than the tape echo machines of yesteryear. The warm, fat tones of the vintage reel-to-reel tape units have become the stuff of legends, but they are hard to come by, pretty temperamental and typically quite expensive. Gauss Tape Echo realistically emulates the sound of those legendary tape echo machines, plays well with other effects, and is pretty darn affordable!

For more info on the Gauss, visit TC Electronic.

Vibraclone rotary

Every guitar player knows the thick, syrupy tones of the iconic 60s guitar heroes blasting their licks through a rotating speaker cone. SRV, Hendrix, Trower and Gilmour to mention a few - they all mastered the unique tone of the original rotating speaker designs. Vibraclone brings that same luscious whirl to your sound, allowing you to explore everything from earthy and swampy to ethereal and spacy ambient tones - all the way up to full-on kaleidoscopic psychedelia!

For more info on the Vibraclone, visit TC Electronic.

Ibanez Nu Tube Screamer unveiled

It's a Tubescreamer that uses Korg's Nutube. Sweetwater has its listed on pre-order for $249 (yikes.) The Nu Tube Screamer is expected to make its formal debut at this month's NAMM show.

Equipped with a Nutube vacuum tube, the Ibanez Nu Tube Screamer is a worthy successor to one of the most-played overdrive pedals of all time. And it's even more versatile than the original, with a mix control for blending your dry tone with the overdriven sound. Thanks to its Nutube circuitry, the Nu Tube Screamer delivers impressive dynamics, excellent sensitivity, and tube-like compression when you hit it hard. And just like the original, the Ibanez Nu Tube Screamer is also an awesome clean boost for overdriving a tube amplifier that is already at the edge of breakup.

Nutube technology delivers genuine tube tone
Guitarists should be excited about Nutube technology — it offers the harmonic richness of tube distortion in a smaller, more power efficient package. It's a genuine vacuum tube, and that's why the Nu Tube Screamer has such an amp-like response. Explore its gain range with your picking dynamics, and enjoy the natural tube compression that takes hold when you dig into it.

Mix control for sonic versatility
More and more guitarists at Sweetwater are seeking out overdrive options with a mix control like the Nu Tube Screamer offers. You can balance the grind of the overdrive with the clear attack of your clean tone, which is especially useful for cutting through when playing lead. With the mix control fully counter-clockwise, you can use the Nu Tube Screamer as a pristine clean boost for pushing your amp's front end harder.

Even more headroom and gain
While the Ibanez Nu Tube Screamer can be powered by a 9V battery or power supply (sold separately), you can also use an 18V power supply for added headroom and gain.

Ibanez Nu Tube Screamer Overdrive Pedal Features:

Boost/overdrive pedal with Nutube vacuum tube technology
Amp-like response, with natural tube compression when you hit it hard
Mix control for blending dry tone with overdrive
Can be run on 9V power, or 18V power for greater gain and headroom
True bypass switching completely removes the circuit from your signal path when bypassed

MF Stupid Deal - Pigtronix Echolution 2 Filter Pro Delay

Musician's Friend is running a daily deal on the Pigtronix Echolution 2 Filter Pro delay pedal for $209, which is $120 off its usual price.

The Echolution 2 Filter PRO is way more than a delay. This massively flexible multi-tap stereo modulation delay features an entire array of customizable filter, LFO and pitch shifting options along with expression pedal and envelope control of every knob as well as complete MIDI control of every function. 60 user definable presets provide easy access to an unprecedented variety of tap tempo dual delay, synchronized LFO modulation, pitch shifting, bit crushing and moving filter effects. A free, in-depth editor for PC and MAC allows musicians to dig even deeper to customize the behavior and sound of this one of a kind sound design machine.

Pigtronix Echolution 2 combines state-of-the-art analog and digital processing designed to deliver the ultimate delay pedal experience. Echolution 2 achieves the ambient richness of the finest studio delay processors by using 100% analog Class-A, discrete transistor limiters as well as non-linear tape emulator stages and filters to massage the audio coming through the delay line. Fully capable of handling instrument and line level sound sources, the Echolution 2 delivers low-noise, high-headroom delay processing with any rig. Echolution 2 features stereo inputs and outputs, sporting an all analog dry signal path along with extensive analog tone shaping and filtering before and after delay line. Rather than try to mimic the sound of analog delays, the Echolution 2 uses real analog filters and non-linear saturation stages to achieve its signature warmth and dynamic range.

Echolution 2 uses a 24-bit, variable clock, multi-tap delay line that is coded to behave like a futuristic tape machine. Changing the delay time results in the smooth pitch bending of an analog delay system but with a Pigtronix twist that allows drastic delay time changes to create discreet musical intervals. The resulting echoes are then processed through an array of filters and special effects which can be manipulated via assignable expression pedal routing as well as envelope control for each knob.

Accessing and navigating the vast palette of sounds available within the Echolution 2 is easy. Since the pedal is completely programmable, any sound that has been designed using the Echolution 2 Filter PRO or Echolution 2 Ultro PRO pedal can be saved to the unit itself and exported for sharing with friends and other musicians. A dedicated PC/MAC application handles preset management as well as firmware upgrades and also provides Echolution 2 users with real time access to the sounds and advanced editing functionality of the Echolution 2 Ultra PRO

The multi-tap capabilities of the Echolution 2 allow for the use of one or two discreet delays which can be assigned to musical subdivisions of the master delay time. Multi-tap selections include 1, 3/4, 2/3, 1/2, and PHI (the golden ratio). One or any combination of two taps can be selected, allowing for instant access to all of the most crucial musical echo patterns as well as a wide range of unconventional polyrhythms.

The LFO modulation section of the Echolution 2 features true sample rate modulation where both the read and write heads of the delay line are affected by one of four different LFO waveforms (Sine, Square, Saw or Sample and Hold). Each of these LFO waveforms can also be quantized with a STEP mode and will run freely or sync to either tap tempo and MIDI with a variable speed ratio from 1:8 to 8:1.

The Echolution 2 sports four seperate filters (Low Pass, Tape, Comb and Sweep). Each of the first three modes can be combined with the SWEEP filter which is modulated by the LFO as described above. Any of these filter settings can then be run through a unique Pigtronix BIT CRUSHER destruction filter within the delay line as well. The delay line can also be turned off, to allow for the advanced modulation, pitch shifting and filter capabilities to be used as stand-alone effects.

Every knob on the Echolution 2 can be mapped to the expression pedal. Using the included software, multiple functions can be mapped to expression with adjustable range for each parameter. Additionally, an envelope follower within the pedal can also be mapped to any parameter, with user definable sensitivity and release time for each function.

Advanced features such as Reverse, Ducking, Trails, Listen and Ping Pong modes are augmented by a unique Halo “Shimmer” function which causes the echoes to rise in octaves on each repeat. The externally triggered Freeze function allows you to loop the content of the delay line and an all new footswitch activated “Jump” function sends your echoes cascading up by any desired musical interval within an a when desired. The TRS remote switch accessory pedal for the Echolution 2 provides Jump and Freeze functions as well as instant access to four favorite presets in each bank.

Echolution 2 supports up to 60 custom presets contained in 6 banks of 10, all of which can be edited in real time via the front panel and saved to the machine. Hands free Preset selection is accomplished by holding down the onboard TAP switch, using an external remote footswitch or via MIDI preset change command. The included PC/MAC application allows even deeper real time editing as well as the ability to import artist presets and share your own custom presets online.

MIDI IN provides instant preset change, Tap Tempo and LFO synchronization with an external source as well as remote control over every function of the Echolution 2. MIDI OUT allows for tap tempo control over the Pigtronix Infinity Looper and other MIDI capable devices. The USB port on the Echolution 2 provides connectivity to MAC or PC computers, allowing you to run the free Echolution 2 application for preset management and real-time tweaking of advanced parameters.
